An organized list of the best free and fee-based resources for writing and researching grant proposals.

Government Grants

Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (free): provides a full listing of all Federal programs available to State and local governments (including the District of Columbia); federally-recognized Indian tribal governments; Territories (and possessions) of the United States; domestic public, quasi- public, and private profit and nonprofit organizations and institutions; specialized groups; and individuals.  Please note that not all CFDA's have an associated appropriation (i.e., just because it comes up in the Catalog doesn't mean there is funding available). 

Federal Register (free):  the Federal Register is the official daily publication for rules, proposed rules, and notices of Federal agencies and organizations, as well as executive orders and other presidential documents. It is updated daily by 6 a.m. and is published Monday through Friday, except Federal holidays. Information on available grants is just one part of this massive resource. Features a search tips page that explains how to search by subject, agency, date, etc. 

FedBizOpps.gov (free):  A reputable site for searching over 28,000 federal contracting opportunities, not including grants. 

Grants.gov (free):  Grants.gov is a central storehouse for information on over 1,000 grant programs and provides access to approximately $500 billion in annual awards. Comprehensive information on all federal granting agencies. 

National Institutes of Health Website (free): Source of information on programs funded by NIH as well as tips for successful proposal-writing and grants management. "Extramural grants account for approximately 83 percent of NIH's $30 billion budget. These are awarded to investigators throughout the U.S. and abroad." (from the website) The Research Portfolio Online Reporting Tools section allows you to search for funded projects.

National Science Foundation Website (free): "With an annual budget of about $6.9 billion (FY 2010), we are the funding source for approximately 20 percent of all federally supported basic research conducted by America's colleges and universities. In many fields such as mathematics, computer science and the social sciences, NSF is the major source of federal backing." (from the website)
