Stevenson University Collection Development Policy

This policy articulates the guidelines used for materials purchase at Stevenson University. It was last updated in Fall 2010.

Introduction

In its Catalog, the Mission Statement of Stevenson University is defined as follows:

“[Stevenson] University is an innovative, coeducational, independent university offering undergraduate and graduate students a career-focused education marked by individualized attention, civility, and respect for difference. The University blends the liberal arts with career exploration and planning, complementing a traditional education with applied learning beyond the classroom. The University meets students where they are and supports and challenges them to become reflective and accomplished individuals committed to a lifetime of learning and contribution. Students graduate with the competence and confidence needed to address creatively the opportunities and problems facing their communities, the nation, and the world.”

To express its support of the University’s mission, members of the Library staff drafted a mission statement of its own.  The Library Management has included in its Mission Statement that a vital part of its activity is:

“[D]eveloping and maintaining a collection that complements the curriculum.”

The Stevenson University Library endeavors to develop its collections within the framework the University has defined.  In that context, the Library’s collection development efforts include, but are not limited to, the following activities:

  1. To acquire and make available to the University’s students materials that support its career-centered curricula as well as those that support its more traditional fields of study.
  2. Where possible and advisable, the Library makes its collections available in a format that can be used by students and other constituents “where they are”
  3. It makes materials available that assist students in career choices.
  4. It makes material available to students for recreational use, to help them become “accomplished individuals committed to a lifetime of learning and contribution”.
