ENG 282: Literary Genres: Youth Literature: Off-campus Resources

Baltimore County Public Library

The Baltimore County Public Library (BCPL) system has locations throughout the county, including one a short distance from campus (so close, the Stevenson shuttle will take you there!).

You can get a public library card for the BCPL even if you live out of state. The public library has many resources for elementary and middle school students.  They also have many ways to support classroom teachers.

To learn more about acquiring an e-card, click here.

Once you have an e-card, sign up for an account with Overdrive, BCPL's eBook service. Then you can easily browse their large collection of eBooks for children and youth by selecting "Kids" under collections or clicking here.

Please note that some of the databases may not work right while you are on campus.  I'm trying to figure out the technical issues behind his.  For today I recommend using one of these databases from BCPL:

  • Kids InfoBits
  • Biography in Context
  • NoveList K-8
  • Science Reference Center

You can access the databases remotely or by visiting the library.

Searching Online

Online information from museums, archives, and special librarians can enhance your lessons.  To focus online searches on these types of institutions limit your search by the domain .org, .gov, or .edu.

In Google, you'll need to go to their advanced search screen and enter one of these in the domain field.  In other web browsers like Firefox or IE or Ecosia (the browser that plants trees when you search), you can type in your search terms and limit for the domain by using the site: conventions like in this example:  science site: .org.

Enoch Pratt Free Library

Enoch Pratt Free Library is the library system for Baltimore City. It has 22 locations throughout the city, with many of their resources and services also available online.

If you are a Maryland resident, you can easily register for an eCard from Enoch Pratt by clicking this link. With your eCard, you have access to their databases full of downloadable content and online research resources
