Here's some information on using ProQuest Ebook Central:
ProQuest's Research Assistant feature was launched on April 3. This is an AI-powered tool that can generate a summary (also called an "insight," "takeaway," or "concepts") of the content in a book and find more books on the same title. For more information, see the FAQ on ProQuest's website. Some of the common questions include:
How do I generate insights?
The Research Assistant is automatically enabled on eligible books and can be found on the left side of the screen for PDFs, or on the right side of the screen for EPUBs.
I asked the Research Assistant to look for more books on the same topic, but it couldn't find any. Why not?
For the Research Assistant to be able to find more books, two things need to happen:
Not all books in the world are included in this database, and some companies or authors may have opted out. If you can't find more books on the same topic using the Research Assistant, you may need to look outside of this database. Try our library catalog, OneSearch, or Worldcat to look for books the same way you would have before the Research Assistant was released.
How is the AI fact-checked? Can it produce hallucinations or bias?
ProQuest's official response is that they use Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) to "ensure responses are grounded in the book chapter itself, reducing the chance of hallucinations or bias." However, they recommend that you double-check the summaries to make sure they accurately reflect the information in the book. You can vote on the quality of the insights using the thumbs-up or thumbs-down buttons.
Will user interactions be used to train the AI model?
No. User interactions are not recorded or used to train the AI model.
Can I turn off the Research Assistant?
Not completely, but you can hide it by closing the side panel.
