There are many services available to you through the SU Wellness Center including screenings, counseling and helpful resources.
One of the requirements for
HSR-270, Mr. Shaffer’s Addictions class, is for students to attend an open
meeting of a 12 Step Program and submit a paper on their experience. Here are some of the comments by students who
attended a meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA):
“My first experience going to
a 12 Step AA meeting opened my life to a whole new world; my perceptions and
assumptions about alcoholics were completely changed in a matter of 90
minutes.” B.O.
“AA is not what I thought it
would be; the meeting was inspirational and the members were amazing.” J.G.
“Going to the AA meeting was
a great experience and something that I will remember forever.” S.M.
“My experience was the best I
could have ever had… [And] helped me realize that I really do want to be an
addictions counselor.” D.S.
“It was an eye opening
experience that has given me a greater appreciation for Alcoholics
Anonymous.” M.B.
“I never thought in a million
years I would be attending an AA meeting.
It was a great experience learning how the meetings are run and how they
really help alcoholics.” S.H.
“The meetings were not
religious like I thought they would be.
[However], I felt a definite connection in the room.” S.S.
