APA In-Depth: Web Sources

This guide will help you learn the basics of APA (7th ed.) style and referencing.

Citing Web Resources (APA Style)

General Format:

Author, A. (date). Title of work. Site Name. URL or DOI

  • When the author and the site name are the same, omit the site name from the source element.
  • If possible, cite sources found on the web according to the type of content (e.g. government report) and add information about how it was retrieved (e.g. URL). If the web content cannot be easily categorized, such as the home page for an organization's website, use the following four elements in the citation: author, date, title, source. Include a format type only for non-routine information, such as a blog post.
  • Note: If there is no author, put the title in place of the author. If there is no date, insert "n.d." in place of the date.

Corporate Website/Author Example:

National Alliance on Mental Illness. (n.d.). Criminal justice. http://www.nami.org/Template.cfm?Section=Criminalization&Template=/ContentManagement/ContentDisplay.cfm&ContentID=156499

Government Report Example:

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. (2014). National diabetes statistics report, 2014.  https://www.cdc.gov/diabetes/data/statistics-report/index.html
