Welcome to Our New Outreach and Instruction Librarian!
Brianna E. Hughes, the newest member of the Stevenson University Library staff, joined us this month. She works at the Owings Mills Library and, in addition to her outreach duties, is also the liaison to the School of Design as well as the Theatre and Media Performance department.
Brianna graduated from the University of South Carolina with a Master of Library and Information Science and a Graduate Certificate in Museum Studies. Since graduation, she has dabbled in many areas of librarianship including special collections, archives, digital collections, technical and public services, and now library instruction, outreach, and marketing. Brianna’s approach to librarianship centers on the user experience and access to library services. Her research interests include social media and libraries, as well as diversity and inclusion topics in librarianship and public services. Brianna also graduated with Bachelors of Arts degrees in Music and History from St. Mary’s College of Maryland, where she wrote a senior thesis on women in Italian opera of the Romantic period.
Brianna is originally from Virginia, but currently lives in Baltimore City with her spouse, toddler child, and two cats. Her hobbies include gardening, reading, playing the piano, and knitting. Brianna is an avid sports fan and cheers for many of the local teams including the Washington Capitals, Washington Mystics, and the Baltimore Orioles.

The 7th Edition of the APA Manual is Here!
Earlier this month the American Psychological Association released the seventh edition of its citation manual. There have been many changes, both large and small; however, the library is here to make it less confusing! We will be holding a drop-in workshop later in the fall term for any faculty member wishing to learn about the updates. Starting in the spring term, the library will be instructing students based on the new model. If you have any questions in the meantime, or wish to read about it yourself, there are copies of the new APA Manual located at each of our three locations.

The Second Annual Library Research Award
The Library is sponsoring the second annual Library Research Award (LibRA) this year. LibRA recognizes exceptional research projects created by undergraduate students, either individually or in groups.
If one or more of your students did especially great work in a 2019 course, you can encourage them to apply for LibRA. The winner will receive a $200 award and have the project archived in SU's institutional repository.
The deadline is February 7, 2020, and winners will be announced on February 28. Full details are available here.

MD-SOAR Usage Survey Open Through November 2019
We want your opinions on Stevenson Scholar Exchange! The Maryland Shared Open Access Repository, which hosts our institutional repository, is still seeking user feedback. We've decided to keep the survey open through November 2019, so you still have time to respond (please pretend that we didn't already announce that it would be close in mid-October).
Even if you've never used the Exchange before, your opinions are still important. They'll help us figure out better ways to publicize our institutional repository and make it user-friendly.
The survey is available online. We welcome positive feedback, negative feedback, audio feedback, and all feedback in between..

Late Night Against Procrastination
The Library's Late Night Against Procrastination event will return this fall on Monday, November 11 from 7-10 p.m. This year we're partnering with Student Activities to provide new crafts, stress relief activities, and fun giveaways in the new Garrison Coffeehouse.
Librarians, Academic Link tutors, and Success Coaches will be on hand to assist with assignments or provide tips and guidance. Tell your students to come check us out for the free coffee and stay to make a dent in their schoolwork!

Remember Us to Your Students!
With projects coming due, research and citation questions abound. Please remind your students to drop by the library, make a research appointment or use our AskUs e-mail service when they have questions. We’re here to help.

About Kanopy
Most of our library databases have a flat subscription fee. The library pays a certain amount and the journal articles, e-books, etc. are available to the SU community.
Kanopy’s fee structure is a little different. We are charged on the basis of how many times a film is watched. It’s a great resource and we certainly don’t want to discourage its use for academic purposes, but please keep the cost and possible alternatives in mind when you view the videos. It may be helpful to know a purchase is triggered on the fourth viewing. DVDs are not as convenient as streaming, but they are more cost-effective.
