Koha is a Gift!
It's also our new library catalog and circulation system. It was developed in New Zealand and the name is the Maori word for "gift" or "donation." It's open source, web-based, and very user-friendly for both library staff and the SU community. In addition to the usual features, such as being able to search for books and other items, some new options are:
- Holds: When looking for material, you will be able to request that a specific title be sent to any of our three locations for pickup
- Better notifications: For your convenience, you'll receive email notifications when an item is available to be picked up or when it's almost due. No more excuses for overdue books!
- Create a list: You will be able to create personalized lists of library materials that are relevant to you.
- Virtual shelf browsing: When looking for a book online, you can see not only the book you searched for, but also the books next to it. You won't see books from other libraries in the catalog as you did in the past, but you can still request items we don't have through interlibrary loan.
- Expanded searching: Links for searching beyond SU are on the results page under More Searches.
- Borrowing history and privacy policy: Your borrowing and search history are automatically kept private. However, if you like being able to see a list of items you've borrowed or searches you've done, you can opt into this feature.
- Single sign-on: You'll now use your SU username and password (not your barcode number) to log in to the library catalog, just as you would your ILL account or email.

Purchase Request?
We are happy to announce that Christina Hipsley, our Collection Development and Electronic Resources Librarian, became a full-time staff member this summer and will now be handling purchase requests. (We think Christina is happy about it too.)
If there's something you'd like the Library to add to its collection, you can email Christina at chipsley@stevenson.edu or contact your library liaison. You can also submit suggestions using the Purchase suggestions link in the new library catalog.

An Update to Our Tutorials Page
It's been a busy summer for the librarians (and our one lone intern—if anyone wants a reference for a hardworking employee in California, let us know) as we've been updating and overhauling our student tutorials.
On our new tutorials page, you'll find videos, graphics, and other guides on all aspects of doing research. Some sections cover general topics such as developing a topic and evaluating resources; others are about how to use specific resources like Zotero, OneSearch, and Nexis Uni.
Students can use these tutorials when they have specific questions, but they could also be assigned as homework or a pre-class activity.

Information Literacy Toolkit
You've heard the librarians talk about information literacy, but have you ever wondered exactly what it is or how we teach it at Stevenson University?
Explore our new Information Literacy Toolkit to find explanations and other resources.
You'll find out about the six important concepts that students need to succeed as researchers and scholars.
The toolkit also offers ideas for activities and lesson plans that students can do in your class, with a librarian, or on their own (or all three!).

Citation Resources
Resources for citing correctly in APA, MLA, Chicago, and other styles can be found in the Citing Sources guide, along with directions for using NoodleTools and Zotero.
However, links to the Purdue Online Writing Lab (OWL) will no longer be found on our library pages. Formerly, the Purdue OWL was a great and reliable resource – one of the first places we went to.
Unfortunately, OWL has entered into a partnership with Chegg and Chegg's services are being actively promoted on OWL's pages, to the detriment of the other information provided. There are serious problems with the quality of support Chegg provides, how their resources help students cheat, privacy concerns, and even whether what they are doing is legal.
These articles will provide more details for you:
As always, the library staff is happy to help students unravel the mysteries of citation or present class sessions, as requested.

Share Your Thoughts on MD-SOAR This Fall
This past spring, the Stevenson Scholar Exchange celebrated its second year as our institutional repository. The Exchange is part of the Maryland Shared Open Access Repository, a shared digital repository platform for eleven colleges and universities in Maryland. This year the MD-SOAR governance committee is seeking feedback from all users, including faculty, staff, administrators, and students.
You can respond to the survey and share your thoughts here. The survey will be open until mid-October (sorry, there are no prizes for being the first person to respond).
As always, we are interested in adding faculty and student work to the Exchange. If you've published something, or if one of your students has done excellent work that you'd like us to include, please contact Elizabeth Fields at efields2@stevenson.edu.
