APA In-Depth: In-Text Citation

This guide will help you learn the basics of APA (7th ed.) style and referencing.

In-Text Citations in APA Style

APA Style utilizes the author-date method of in-text citations, meaning that each citation within your paper should include the source's author (or title if no author is listed) and date of publication. There are multiple ways you can incorporate this information into your text.

  1. Full Parenthetical Citation: Place the author, date, and page numbers in parentheses at the end of the sentence (Author, 2014, p. 12).
  2. Partial Parenthetical Citation: Mention the Author (2014, p. 12) in the sentence and place the date and page numbers in parentheses immediately following the name.

Note: Page numbers are required only for direct quotations. You are encouraged to include page numbers when paraphrasing as well, but they are not required in this case.

Missing Information:

  • If a source does not have an author, use the title instead ("No Author," 2014).
  • If a source does not have a date, use "n.d." (Author, n.d.).

Multiple Authors:

  • For two authors, include both names each time you cite the source (Author & Coauthor, 2014).
  • For three or more authors, use the first author's name followed by "et al." for all citations (Author et al., 2014).

For more examples and details about in-text citations for different types of sources, refer to the APA Publication Manual.
