Why Cite Sources?

Why Cite Sources?

In academic writing, authors are expected to cite their sources for a variety of reasons:

  • It gives credit to the author(s) whose work you're using.
  • It allows readers to find more information on your topic if they're interested.
  • It demonstrates your integrity and your understanding of academic standards and requirements.

CSE Style

CSE Citation Resources

In this field, students usually cite in Council of Science Editors (CSE) style.  Please note that the Stevenson University Biology Department has chosen to use the Name-Year style offered in CSE. In general, they ask students to use the full journal title, e.g. Journal of Plant Physiology rather than J Plant Phys.

The library has many resources for citation.

The CSE Manual, 9th edition is available in full text as an ebook:

The library's CSE citation guide is available here. We also have information about using Zotero to help you keep track of your research and cite your sources.

The CSE Manual site has a great deal of information about the mechanics of citation.
